Multiple peer-reviewed studies have found that many developing, untrained, and less-accurate singers reproduce isolated pitches and short intervals more accurately from human vocal models than from piano, instrumental, sine-wave, or synthetic references.1–6

What the research shows
Controlled studies have reported a human-voice advantage in adults, children, untrained singers, and singers who have difficulty matching pitch. The strongest results concern immediate imitation of isolated notes, intervals, and short patterns.
The effect is not universal. Vocal experience, comfortable range, similarity between the reference voice and the singer, and the task itself can all influence the result.7, 8
Why "Doo"?
The opening d gives the note a clear entrance, while the sustained vowel gives the singer time to hear and match the pitch. The Seattle Singing Accuracy Protocol also uses "doo" because the consonant creates a distinct acoustic marker that helps its software locate note onsets.9
That supports "Doo" as a clear timing and reference cue. It does not prove that the consonant alone improves intonation.
What we do not claim
These studies do not establish that Pitch Pipe improves long-term singing ability, that every singer performs better with a vocal reference, or that a recorded human voice is superior to every modern synthetic choir. Pitch Pipe has not yet been tested in a controlled outcomes study.
